Sharks Gobbling Skins
Published on 03-24-2010 08:42 AM

Intrepid report March 22: “The wahoo were the main target during the day, then we focused on tuna in the late afternoon. The wahoo were aggressive, as we would get triple and quadruple jig strikes followed up by several fish on the bombs. In the end we caught 50 wahoo, but could have got many more if the sharks let them stick around the boat. We lost many to the sharks today.

“The yellowfin also came up good in the evening and we were able to get some big fish in the 110 to 160-pound range. We had quite a few big Tuna taken by the sharks this evening. We will catch some bait tonight and do it again tomorrow.”

Weather’s Down, Fishing’s Up

“We had excellent weather and fishing today,” noted the report from Royal Polaris March 22. “We had flat seas, clear skies, and sunny. Our morning started out a bit slow, but the water temp came up four degrees, and so did our bite. We had a good bite on yellowfin in the 140 to 160-pound catagory. It was a perfect day of fishing. The sharks did get a few fish, but that's fishing. We ended our day with 28 yellowfin and 40 wahoo.

“Good weather, good fishing, and a great group of anglers, what more could you ask for?”

At The Dock Tomorrow

Red Rooster III, skippered by Andy Cates, will be arriving at H&M Landing Wednesday, March 24. The boat is returning from the 15-day Loftus & Martin charter, and is scheduled to tie up and disembark passengers at nine in the morning.

Tomorrow’s The Day

The Del Mar Fred Hall Shows begins tomorrow at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Doors open at two pm, and several large building will feature displays, booths, lectures, food and items from hooks to sea-going boats. This event and the upcoming Day At The Docks are the two largest family-style of their kind in San Diego County. The fishing season has already started, so don’t miss The Fred Hall Show at Del Mar, and don’t forget to bring the family!

There are a variety of fish that live inside the bay including spotted bass, sand bass, white seabass, halibut, yellowfin croaker, jacksmelt, small sharks and rays, and the ever so popular "mud-marlin" - giant bat rays exceeding 150 pounds! Sometimes there are also a few mackerel, bonito, and juvenile barracuda just outside the mouth of the harbor, primarily on the "Wedge" side.

All you need to bring are three rods in 6 1/2 to 8 foot all with 6 pound and 8 pound test. The wedge area and the coast guard area are generally very productive for bass and halibut. The bay has tons of legals and the fishing has been very good in the past weeks. I usually set a rod out on clicker with bait and throw plastics with another rod. Smaller fish traps and aa curly tail grubs kill the bass and halibut. The area right in front of the pavilion is ok as well. Just set drift and fish hard. Tight lines

Myself and Nathan would like to thank you for your excellent service. Captain Cameron and Chris did an excellent job putting us on and decking the fish for our trip. Even though the conditions were less then perfect (6-8 foot seas), we were provided with a safe, stable and dry platform. Over the course of the day we caught a plethora of fish. The memories this trip has provided are priceless and I can assure you we will give you a call on our next trip.

Thanks again!
