Yellowfin Tuna are one of the most common types of tuna that are fished, aside from Albacore. Their prevalence in the shallow, open waters makes for an accessible, fun fishing experience and so does their reputation for being tenacious. Yellowfins can weigh hundreds of pounds, not to mention they are incredibly fast swimmers; some have been recorded swimming at speeds of over 40 miles an hour. These characteristics of the Yellowfin Tuna make catching one an exciting and eye-opening experience. Many newcomers to Yellowfin fishing are overwhelmed by the sheer force and resistance these fish can present to the fishing line. In California, most Yellowfin Tuna caught are between 30-50 pounds, but they still put up quite a fight. They are most often caught in warm waters above 70 degrees Fahrenheit and down to depths of around 100 meters (+/- 25 meters). The most efficient way to catch these beautiful fish is to throw live anchovies into the water to lure them up. In terms of equipment, fishing for Yellowfins typically requires heavy duty rods (one inch thick), large tackle (three inches long), and a two-speed reel. Small squid, mackerel or other baitfish can be used as bait. There’s no mistaking a hooked Yellowfin. All of a sudden you’ll see the pole bending a sharp crescent and line being mercilessly spun out from the reel. Most of all you’ll feel every muscle in your body strain to pull it in. So if you like to fight for your prize, Yellowfin Tuna is for you. |
